JOB SUMMARY:
Performs R&D functions, tests, and experiments for the control and maintenance of assigned formulations and for the development of new materials for specific applications. May process inquiries requesting the development of new materials. Tests and evaluates new chemicals, fibers, powders, polymers, and processes. Plans and leads product development projects.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs research and development on new materials and products.
- Performs necessary tests, investigations, and analyses necessary for effective maintenance of existing material formulations.
- Changes existing formulations to achieve better processing or physical characteristics and properties.
- Reviews with manufacturing personnel the effects of changes in formulations on processing operations and acts necessary to overcome problems.
- Conducts tests, experiments, and analyses with new materials introduced on the market. Make recommendations for the application of new materials to company products.
- Processes inquiries where non-standard materials are required to achieve essential properties. Prepares experimental formulations and test batches and makes required analyses. Outlines recommended materials requirements.
- May be required to establish process specifications for new and revised materials including running and overseeing manufacturing.
- Gives technical assistance to engineering groups, marketing, sales, manufacturing, and lower-level Material Engineers.
- Keeps abreast of the latest developments in areas Polymers, fibers, powders and other materials and processes through study of technical literature and membership in technical societies.
- Uses statistical analysis methods to collect and analyze data.
- Work with sales & marketing teams to collect customer requirements. Incorporate requirements into project specifications and deliver results to agreed milestones.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Polymers/Materials Science or related scientific field from an accredited college/university with min. for 3-5 years of related work experience preferred
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or Polymer/Materials Science with 5+ years of related work experience preferred
- Min. 3-5 years of hands-on polymer development/formulation and processing experience with Polymers and fluorinated plastics preferred
- Knowledge of compounding with polymers, additives, and fillers.
- Self-starter, highly motivated toward achievements, results oriented.
- Ability to interpret the polymer chemistry/engineering and apply towards end product properties/applications.
- Understanding of design of experiments, polymer characterization and testing.
- Solid project management skills.
- Ability to travel as required.
- Knowledge and experience in formulating compounds and polymer materials.
- Industrial/Manufacturing experience in polymer processes
- Mixing and forming of polymers and related formulations
- Experience with 6 sigma tools and design for lean manufacturing.

Enpro carefully considers a wide range of compensation factors including the background, education, training, and experience required, as well as geographic considerations such as cost of labor, and applicable local and state laws. These considerations can cause offered compensation to vary. The hiring range for this position is typically $77,000 - $125,000 annually. The actual offer will be based on the individual candidate. Bonus, gainshare, and/or equity may be eligible for this position.
