JOB SUMMARY:
The Materials Research Engineer position will be responsible for the development and analysis of currently used and new materials for use in current products. This person will also be responsible for innovative development of these new materials and products guided by company growth initiatives. The Research Engineer will act as a cross-functional team member in pursuing assigned initiatives to a successful and timely conclusion with The Sealing Group across multiple facilities (Columbia, SC DeLand, FL and Chicago, IL) and product lines. This will require experience with metallurgy with and knowledge of ceramics, surface treatments and polymerics.

Hands-on material testing and performance analysis with regards to material compositions, tribology, and compatibility with other materials.
Understanding of SAE/MIL specifications to adjust industrial processes (heat treatment, forming, purchasing etc.) as needed
Assist the design team in material identification, analysis, and selection for product design use in demanding environments ranging from cryogenic temperatures to beyond 1600 oF.
Will be responsible for developing and executing on strategic research programs as necessary, and based on the direction of the Innovation Steering Committee and Director of R&D
Develop, plan and execute material tests internally and with outside partners to evaluate and analyze current and future materials
Utilize laboratory tools for material characterization such as metallographic preparation tools and various microscopes and thermal analyzing equipment
Perform as main point of contact for certain projects and instances where outside partnerships are used for strategic and innovation related projects
Publish results to technical reports internally and externally in a professional manner
Actively participates in Safety Committee Team and continuous improvement initiatives around the Columbia facility.
Performs any other assigned duties as directed by management.
Travel may be required up to 20% of the time
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering/Material Science or similar discipline from a four-year ABET accredited institution is required; Master’s degree is a plus.
Demonstrable technical problem-solving ability and good quality decision making is required.
Technical knowledge and practical experience in testing and analyzing materials capabilities, tribology and performance characteristics at cryogenic and extremely high temperatures. Strong emphasis on metallurgy with knowledge of ceramics, surface treatments, and polymers
Strong knowledge of thermal effects on materials preferred
Proficiency using SolidWorks or similar 3D solid modeling is preferred.
The desire to strive for continuous improvement and excellence within a fast-paced growth environment.
Proficiency using ANSYS or similar finite element analysis code is desirable but not required.
Product design, development and implementation experience a plus.
Experience in the design and fabrication of metal seals, fittings, or flanges is a plus.
Familiarity with NADCAP, AS9100, ISO9001, Six Sigma, and Lean Manufacturing is a plus.

Understanding of project management skills and have the ability to drive projects to conclusion
Ability to work effectively both independently and in a global team environment
Excellent written and oral communication skills
