Join Advanced Micro Instruments (AMI) as a Mechanical Engineer and play a key role in the design, development, and long‑term success of AMI’s gas analyzers and analytical instrumentation. In this highly impactful position, you will be responsible for driving mechanical design efforts from early concept through product development, manufacturing introduction, and sustaining engineering. Your work will directly influence the performance, reliability, manufacturability, and serviceability of AMI products used in demanding real-world environments.

The Mechanical Engineer will work closely with cross‑functional teams to translate product requirements into practical, well‑engineered mechanical solutions. This is a hands‑on engineering role responsible for leading assigned mechanical design projects for complex analytical instrumentation from concept through production. The position combines strong mechanical design expertise with direct involvement in prototyping, validation, manufacturing support, and sustaining engineering. This role operates with a high degree of autonomy on assigned projects, with limited guidance provided on complex, cross‑system, or ambiguous design decisions.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead assigned mechanical design projects of gas analyzers and related instrumentation from concept through production and sustaining engineering, escalating complex or ambiguous design decisions as appropriate.
  • Design mechanical systems and enclosures suitable for operation in hazardous and explosive atmospheres, meeting applicable regulatory and safety requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to define requirements and deliver mechanical design solutions that enable high‑performance, manufacturable gas analyzers.
  • Create and maintain high‑quality 3D models, assemblies, and detailed drawings in SolidWorks, applying best practices for GD&T, manufacturability, and serviceability.
  • Design and specify custom machined components, sheet metal, and injection‑molded parts, collaborating with vendors on DFM feedback, tooling, and fabrication.
  • Perform hands‑on assembly, testing, and validation of mechanical subsystems during the product development process and participate in system‑level testing and troubleshooting.
  • Interface directly with suppliers and manufacturing partners to obtain quotes, evaluate lead times, place orders, and manage schedules for prototype, pre‑production, and engineering builds of both standard and custom components.
  • Manage and execute Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) for assigned projects, ensuring proper documentation, cross‑functional alignment, and configuration control.
  • Work within an ISO 9001–compliant quality system, supporting audits, documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • In partnership with quality manager, support manufacturing operations by troubleshooting issues on the production floor, resolving nonconformances, and driving corrective actions.
  • Support sustaining engineering efforts, including product improvements, cost reduction initiatives, and supplier transitions.

  • Experience supporting products in a manufacturing environment, including hands‑on production floor engagement.
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM, with demonstrated expertise in mechanical design and detailed drawing creation.
  • Solid understanding and practical application of GD&T and mechanical drawing standards.
  • Experience creating and maintaining BOMs, assembly instructions, and work instructions in an ERP system.
  • Ability to travel occasionally (up to 10%)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing products subject to tight regulatory controls, particularly for use in explosive or hazardous environments (e.g., ATEX, IECEx, or similar).
  • Demonstrated experience designing gas analyzers or analytical instrumentation, including integration of mechanical assemblies, gas flow paths, sensing elements, and enclosure design, with attention to performance, reliability, and serviceability.
  • Demonstrated experience designing optical measurement systems incorporating components such as lasers, LEDs, photodiodes, optical filters, and lenses, including mechanical integration, alignment considerations, and environmental stability.
  • Familiarity with gas sensing technologies such as electrochemical, zirconium oxide, or related sensor types.
